SHARE - Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe

The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) is a research infrastructure for studying the effects of health, social, economic and environmental policies over the life-course of European citizens and beyond. From 2004 until today, 480,000 in-depth interviews with 140,000 people aged 50 or older from 28 European countries and Israel have been conducted. Thus, SHARE is the largest pan-European social science panel study providing internationally comparable longitudinal micro data which allow insights in the fields of public health and socio-economic living conditions of European individuals.

Looking at the socio-economic consequences of COVID-19 in Europe:

Data from the SHARE Corona Survey together with SPLASH allow examining in-depth how the risk group of the older individuals is coping with the health-related and socioeconomic impact of COVID-19. The great advantage of these data is the possibility to measure and interpret differences in a cross-country and a longitudinal dimension. Find all details in our Special Dataset SectionThe European Commission supports our COVID-19 research project (SHARE-COVID19) with funds provided by Horizon 2020 and the Coronavirus Global Response.

Health and Socio-economic Status over the Life Course.

The data are available to the entire research community free of charge.

SHARE is centrally coordinated by Prof. Dr. h.c. Axel Börsch-Supan, Ph.D. at the Munich Center for the Economics of Aging (MEA), Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy. It is harmonized with the U.S. Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) and has become a role model for several ageing surveys worldwide.

We gratefully acknowledge funding (for an overview click here) from the European Commission (Horizon 2020), the US National Institute on Aging, and national sources, especially the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
